Staunton Senior Center to Host Nutrition Programs in Aug./Sept.

On June 18 the Staunton Senior Center received a call from Kay Stiltner with the Virginia Cooperative Extension who has offered to provide “The Family Nutrition Program” on six Friday mornings in August and September.

The dates are Friday, August 2,9,16, and 23 and September 6 and 13. All programs will take place at 10:00am and include a short, basic nutrition lesson, a preparation demonstration and sampling of a healthy dish.

Kay travels throughout the community with her job visiting housing complexes, senior centers, and other gathering places in order to educate pepole on healthy eating. SSC is looking forward to having her and learning more about this important topic!

Staunton Rotary Announced Donation to Staunton Senior Center

On June 17 the Staunton Rotary Club announced that it will be making a contribution of $750 to Staunton Senior Center.

This donation will be used to continue programming and transportation needs of the Center which will lead to increased participation by local older adults. Much appreciation goes to the members of Staunton Rotary who made this gift possible.

United Way Funds Meals on Wheels

The United Way of Greater Augusta has approved funding of $20,000 for Meals on Wheels services in the Staunton, Augusta, Waynesboro region.

This is the full amount requested in the grant application submitted by then SAW Regional Director Jenn Chestnut earlier in the year. This is also the same amount that they funded this program in the previous grant cycle.

We truly appreciate their continued support for this service that makes a big difference to so many homebound older people in our community.

Outings Make For Fun Day at Staunton Senior Center

This week at Staunton Senior Center concluded with some fun outings for members. At the request of one member, the Program Director had included a morning for visiting some of the local thrift stores. Members spruced up their wardrobes and purchased other needed items, enjoying the cooler temps outdoors as well.

After lunch two of the members were treated to a “Guys Day Out” for Father’s Day, accompanied by two SSC drivers. The foursome journeyed down the hill to “The Store”, a local coffee shop and vegetable market where they found waiting for them scones, macaroons, and tarts as well as freshly ground and brewed coffee. Short, local outings such as these can be a source of great entertainment and fellowship for senior center members, and it is wonderful to support the community as well!

SSC held its WEAAD Kickoff earlier when volunteers picked up packets of purple ribbons to distribute throughout the area. Employees at doctor’s office, big box stores like Walmart, pharmacies, restaurants and other retail stores will be asked to wear the ribbons throughout the week, but especially on Saturday, June 15, in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15.

Waynesboro Senior Center is also distributing ribbons throughout its community. If you’d like to do this in your area, contact Lynn Harris, 540-886-4634.

SAW Received Level Funding from Waynesboro

The 2014 adopted budget for the City of Waynesboro reflects funding of $25,250 for the VPAS SAW Region. The funding is split between the TED transportation program ($13,000) and the VICAP program ($12,250). This is less than the $40,000 requested, but does reflect level funding compared to last year. The funds we did not receive would have gone to further support the VICAP program. This information was provided by Pat Nicosia, Finance Director, from the City of Waynesboro.
